Apple media players dominate Christmas sales

Apple's iPod nano dominated media player sales this holiday season, according to a recent report.

Figures from Current Analysis show that the portable media players claimed eight of the top 10 spots in a ranking of digital audio player sales in the US between 27 November and 30 December.

The five iPod nano models accounted for more than 33 per cent of all players sold, with the silver nano claiming 16.89 per cent of sales.

Flash-based players in general were hot this holiday season, accounting for nearly three-quarters of all media player sales. Of the hard drive-based players, only Apple's 30GB iPod models were able to crack the top 10.

SanDisk's Sansa models occupied the two non-Apple slots in the top 10. The 1GB m240 logged 10.88 per cent of all sales, while the 2GB e250 model claimed 3.36 per cent.

Microsoft's Zune was nowhere to be found, claiming only three per cent of digital audio player sales this holiday season, far behind Apple's 64 per cent and SanDisk's 22 per cent.

The Zune was barely a factor even in the sphere of HDD players, accounting for only 12 per cent compared with the iPod's 82 per cent.
