If you've just upgraded to a serial ATA (Sata) hard drive, and are wondering what to do with your old ATA drive, why not turn it into an external hard drive to back up data or store pictures, video or music files?

There are many DIY hard drive enclosures around, the newest of which is the Icy Box 350 series. Made from aluminium with black mesh sides and front, the Icy Box looks quite stylish and stands out from the normal run of external drive casings.

To access the internals, there are four thumbscrews holding the lid on. Inside, it is a simple matter of fitting your drive and connecting the power and data cables. The rear panel of the unit holds the USB2 port, power connector and power switch.

There are four enclosures in the range: the IB-350UBL (the unit reviewed); IB-350UE-BL, which has both USB2 and Firewire interfaces; IB-350Us-BL, with USB2 and Sata interfaces; and the IB-350E-BL, which has just a Firewire interface.
