Ofcom has published guidelines for the installation of super-fast broadband to new homes.

The industry regulator pointed to experiences in Germany which suggest that a fast broadband infrastructure can add up to seven per cent to the price of a new home.

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "Super-fast broadband is ripe for deployment in new build areas. We need to take advantage of this and encourage investment in networks while promoting competition.

"This will allow consumers to benefit from all the advantages of super-fast access speeds, competitive provision and choice."

Ofcom is considering running fibre optic lines through sewers or power lines to get to the 'last mile' to the home.
