Sony and Sky offer PSP video downloads

Go!View coming to Europe in the summer

Written by Ian Williams

Sony and Sky have teamed up to bring the first official PlayStation Portable video download service to Europe.

Set to be launched in the summer, Go!View is a portable, video-on-demand service designed to provide a range of programming including entertainment, comedy, sport and movies for the PSP.

Users will be able to download content to the PSP via their PC on a subscription or pay-per-view basis.

It is unclear whether subscribers will be able to download content directly to the PSP over the Wi-Fi connection or whether it has to be managed via the PC.

The content will be specifically formatted for the PSP, thereby helping to maximise quality and minimise file size.

"Go!View allows PSP users to take advantage of a unique service, adding another dimension to PSP offerings," said Owen Jenkinson, Go!View marketing manager.

"The opportunity to watch top TV and movies on-the-go and on-demand will allow PSP owners to enjoy their favourite entertainment on their own terms, enhancing the PSP's offering as a portable gaming console."

Prices for content have yet to be confirmed but a spokesman for Sony assured vnunet.com that it will be "competitively priced with similar services".

It is not clear whether the content will be purchased or just rented for a certain amount of time or number of viewings, nor whether the videos will carry DRM protection.
