Two-thirds of UK TVs linked to digital

Sky still top of the pile

Written by Guy Dixon

More than two-thirds of the UK's 60 million televisions get their signals digitally from Freeview, digital cable or Sky, according to Ofcom's latest Digital Progress Report.

The total number of digitally-linked sets grew by around seven million in the first three months of 2008 as viewers prepare for the analogue switch-off in under four months' time.

Sky boasts 8.3 million subscriptions, well ahead of Virgin's 3.5 million. Sky's high definition service added 43,000 subscribers to reach 465,000.

Freeview continues to be a runaway success, clocking up sales of 30 million set-top boxes, PVRs and integrated digital televisions since launching in 2002.

Free satellite services have also proved very popular, with around 720,000 homes were receiving these at the end of March this year.

Sky+, the PVR service, added 262,000 subscribers for the first quarter taking the total to almost 3.4 million, or around 38 per cent of its customers.
