Nokia wraps up Plazes buy

Been there, bought that

Written by Ian Williams

Nokia has completed its acquisition of Berlin-based start-up Plazes slightly ahead of schedule.

The deal to buy the location-based social network for an undisclosed sum was announced at the end of June.

Plazes will be integrated into Nokia's services and software unit and will help the firm develop its context-based services with social presence and time-based activity planning features.

Niklas Savander, head of Nokia services and software, said during the original announcement that the acquisition "helps Nokia bring people and places closer together".

Plazes is similar to Twitter with the inclusion of geo-tagging, and offers the ability to schedule, record and share location-based social events and status updates. The service is expected to be integrated into Nokia Maps.

Nokia is in the middle of a buying frenzy, having recently acquired Navteq, Trolltech and most notably Symbian.
