Vnunet.com's recent articles on 'Windows 7' being unveiled as the
official
name for the next version of Windows, and Microsoft's
follow-up
explanation for the choice, have generated a huge response from our readers.
Many of those who posted comments wanted to share their views on the number
of Windows versions so far, having taken affront at Microsoft's tally of six.
But some offered additional insight into the world of Windows users, and we
thought we'd share some of the more choice responses with you.
So here's the vnunet.com top 10 Windows 7 rants:
10. Coming in at number 10 on our list is 'Aaron Caldwell'
with his comment on Windows ME: "You forgot one ... But I think most of us tried
to forget that one as well." Enough said.
9. Next is 'Jim' who asks "who cares?" what the next version
is called: "All I want is that it works, smoothly, inconspicuously, fast. I'd
like a system that doesn't bloat, that doesn't fragment files when saving them -
for goodness sake hard disks are now big enough. Ah well."
8. 'Shawn Morrissey' has a similar sentiment to 'Jim': "Who
cares what they choose to call it, as long as it doesn't waste as many resources
as Vista currently does. If it was flashy like Vista and ran as fast as XP, that
would be fine with me."
7. 'RandomJoe' had some more constructive advice for
Microsoft: "This should be Windows 2009. Seven makes it sound like it was last
year's technology."
6. 'Black Barack' had a similar laissez-faire attitude to
Microsoft's naming choice: "Windows 7. Seriously, who cares? How about 'Virus
7'? If it's Windows, it sucks."
5. Next on the list is 'Chuck Baggett' who plumped for
Windows 16 as the most sensible choice of product name, but conceded that 7 had
its advantages especially for those worried about green IT issues: "The
suggestion of 16 might work. It could have the nickname 'Sweet 16'. 7 will be
efficient, though. It takes less effort to type '7 sucks' than it does to type
'Vista sucks'. Good for the carbon footprint."
4. At number four, we have 'Jon Mellos', who has one, or
maybe two, concrete reasons for not using any recent version of Windows: "I will
not go to Vista nor this new system. NSA helped develop the security, and that
can mean only one thing, well, maybe 2. They can spy at will or it will be easy
as pie for anyone to break and offer greater risk to exposure to viruses,
Trojans and rootkits. Let's abandon the Windows platform period. Bill Gates has
developed the only business plan in the world that can make a product everyone
hates, and still make billions. Enough with that."
3. 'MJ' is next on the list with a comment aimed at some of
the posters to the original Microsoft blog entry: "When you are smart enough to
write your own software or own your own company OR do anything other than
criticize someone's work then YOU can name the software. Last time I checked
Microsoft wrote the software so they can call it whatever they want." That's
them told, then.
2. Similar advice from 'Dave': "It is their product? Your
thoughts on what *you* think it should be called don't mean jack. If you are
REALLY and TRULY concerned about WHY they are calling it Windows 7, you need to
get out more. There is a world out there."
1. 'Dave' and 'MJ' were both a close call for the top slot
with their useful advice for anyone with an opinion on anything really. But in
the end it had to go to 'JJJ' for his/her grasp of the concept of marketing: "I
would say to be correct, Microsoft should call it Windows 11 … It would also
tell a user it is better than Mac OS 10 because it has a higher version. I
wonder if Microsoft Marketing Department is thinking, or just out to lunch."
Do you agree?
